Five Swans

Today down on still, pacific marsh,
Five snow white swans spent swimming,
Contrasting plumage, stark and harsh,
Quite contrary to Spring's dry brown trimming.

One lone turtle rested, still, reposed,
Tranquilly serene, balanced on that  favored log,
Basking in warm sunshine, old Emydidae dozed,
Turtle's  hard shell shining on that placated bog.

Two puddle ducks dabbling here, three diving ducks there,
Blue Teal with handsome Mallard, Goldeneye with showy Bufflehead,
Regeneration, journey's recess on this halcyon pool, with hardly a care,
Feasting, rejuvenating, till they're plumply fed.

Four song birds flitted to and fro,
Singing happy songs, warbling a splendid trill,
Amongst tall rushes,  whence rushes sprout and grow,
Seeking errant bugs asleep on Nature's window sill.

Woodland's edge, bordering this peaceful pond,
Behold! Six whitetail deer standing still and quiet,
Welcome sunlight dappled, etching a bent and broken frond,
Does and yearlings, nearby a buck, browsing on their spring bud diet.

Seven moths floating on delightful wafting breeze,
Columns and currents of warm spring air, uplifting will,
Flapping powdered wings, drifting midst that esoteric tease,
How long moth's life till it lies spent and still?

Today's the day I count all things,
Eight more of those, nine of these,
Ten dancing woodland Elves wearing golden rings,
Eleven Sprites and Nymphs play hide and seek amongst tall trees.

A dozen lofty peaks reach for the azure sky,
Those rocky ramparts tower high above the fen,
Countless, lazy clouds billow, slowly by,
As April marks the days of men.

thanks, this is beautiful. Did you know that Olwen Joy Byatt had a favour for swans? May I meet this poet next week? When I visit this far off land? At her celebration service - For the Joy of Olwen Joy? 29th July,4.p.m. at the Church by Kaslo City Hall.

Beautiful poetry whatever, and appreciated for it's lovely simplicity.
